Five years ago today, this little beauty came out. Book lifespans are fickle things, but for a small press book in a tough genre, THE ABYSS SURROUNDS US and the way it’s still kicking, still going strong after all this time is a downright miracle. If you had any part to play in that, thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️🐢

hi! hope this isn't a weird question, but i really loved 'the abyss surrounds us' and its sequel. do u happen to have any book recs that might be similar to it? interested to hear about what books the author reads and enjoys! <3

This isn’t a weird question at all—I LOVE recommending books! If you like the Abyss series, I think you’d really enjoy:

  • Rebelwing, by Andrea Tang—it’s sharp, funny, appeals to the Pacific Rim lover in all of us, understands the core psychological need to bond emotionally with a giant mecha dragon, and has a full on anime beach episode sequence with bonus fake dating subterfuge
  • Girl, Serpent, Thorn, by Melissa Bashardoust—queer monster girls! queer monster girls! QUEER MONSTER GIRLS! and really diving deep on morality and what it means to be a monster and how you use violence
  • Gideon the Ninth, by Tamsyn Muir—if you need more grimy, punchy lesbians
  • Seafire, by Natalie C. Parker—if you want a pirate girl gang in a Mad Max-y futuristic water world
